Pelvic Floor Therapy

Dr. Merci offers supportive, compassionate care that helps women to heal and strengthen one of the most sacred parts of their anatomy. Through assessment and therapeutic sessions she addresses issues such as incontinence, prolapse, postpartum recovery, and pelvic pain.

What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles, ligaments and tendons that support the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Pelvic floor therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on rehabilitating and strengthening the pelvic floor. A session begins with a consultation about any symptoms the patient may be experiencing and discussion about the optimal way to treat those symptoms. Treatments may include abdominal and uterine massage, lumbar, sacral and hip myofascial release and trigger point therapy as well as naturopathic remedies. Dr. Merci's integrative pelvic therapy considers the mental, emotional and physical aspects and provides a trauma informed, healing space for female-bodied clients.

Who is it for?

This therapy is typically recommended for individuals who are experiencing pelvic pain, urinary or bowel incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, constipation, vaginismus, hemorrhoids, and more. It is recommended for pregnancy to prepare for childbirth, and postpartum for recovery. Some people carry anxiety and trauma in the pelvis; Dr. Merci is trained to support emotional healing through a gentle, holistic, and respectful approach.

What are the benefits?

Pelvic floor therapy can improve tone and provide relief from pain in the tissues that interweave within the hips. Benefits include increased coordination and strength in the pelvic muscles, relaxation and pain relief, recovery from urinary issues or trauma, and increased awareness of this important part of your body. For postpartum recovery, for those who have never been pregnant, for menopausal changes and beyond, pelvic floor therapy can help patients to regain control of pelvic function, enhance bladder control, alleviate pelvic pain, improve sexual function and their quality of life.
